Inside Out in Times Square

7 May

JR Times Square
WHAT I’M WEARING // YASO Faux Leather Jacket // H&M Blouse // MAVI Jeans (Old) // CHINESE LAUNDRY Leopard Loafers (old, via Delia’s) // HURLEY Backpack // JUSTFAB Sunglasses

Last Friday, Jim and I took our friends Gina and Mark to MOMA and then headed slightly cross-town to Times Square.  The street artist JR currently has the Inside Out Project set up there and we wanted to check it out and hopefully get to participate.

JR is best known for his portraits, so as part of this project he’s taking portraits of New Yorkers throughout the 5 boroughs and installing them in areas around the city.  To make the process crazy efficient, they have a fully outfitted photography studio truck, so they’ve been moving the truck from neighborhood to neighborhood.  If you visit their Facebook Page, the portraits done around the Rockaways and other Sandy stricken areas are so powerful it makes me well up.  I highly recommend checking it out.

We had heard the photo truck was in Times Square so we took a quick walk over to see if we could participate.  Sadly, they weren’t there due to a 10k race being set up for the weekend.  But we still had a great time enjoying the incredible weather and checking out all the portraits pasted to the sidewalks.

Gina and I also wanted to take the opportunity to take our own portraits amongst the portraits.  How meta, right?

The Inside Out Project is supposed to be in Times Square through May 10th. Jim and I are still hoping to make it there one day after work to get ours done. If you participate you have the option to either have it pasted at the site, or to take it home with you. We’d love to have the portraits for our apartment, so fingers crossed we’ll be able to make it happen!

WHAT I’M WEARING // YASSO Faux Leather Jacket // H&M Dress //MIA Boots // CORNELIA GUEST Bag // JUSTFAB Sunglasses

So it’s warm enough nowadays for dresses but not for sandals just yet.  I couldn’t wait to wear this new graphic, black and white tie dye dress I recently picked up at H&M so I threw on some moto style boots and I was ready to go. I have a feeling this outfit will be a uniform for me the next coming weekends.  I LOVE the entire look.

I really like wearing maxi dresses on weekends.  They’re super comfortable and all you have to do is throw it on over your head and you are dressed and presentable for the day with minimal effort.

Notice a trend here on Brooklyn Bliss?  I don’t like having to think or put a lot of effort into much of anything.  Everything’s got to be easy.  That and comfortable.  I might seem pretty put together but truth is I’m just on auto-pilot and have found systems over the years that work well for me.  In all honesty I’m probably one of the laziest people on the planet.  Truth.

WHAT I’M WEARING // A QUESTION OF Tee (bought in Iceland) // ZARA Blazer // H&M Jeans // TARGET Heels // CORNELIA GUEST Handbag // JUSTFAB Sunglasses

I’m not usually a fan of graphic tees, but I spotted this one at a boutique while in Iceland and just had to get it.  I absolutely love its Givenchy reference, and at the same time speaks to my values in a weird way.  The fact that it’s somewhat profane also sold the deal for me.  Even my mother was like “Oh!  You have to buy that shirt it’s soooo you!”.

So in other news I cut all my hair off last week!  These are actually the last photos I took prior to the big chop.  Now that it’s been a week and I’m used to the new ‘do, it’s actually kind of strange for me looking at my old, long locks.  I must say though, I’m a much bigger fan of short hair on me.  I think it’s much more flattering not only for my face and physique, but also for my curls.

Since I was going to chop off over 12 inches of my hair, there was no way I wasn’t going to get it documented somehow plus I wanted the photos for when I donated my hair to Locks of Love.  So stay tuned later this week for photos of the final result as well as some from my actual appointment.

Spring Has Sprung

Spring Has Sprung

WHAT I’M WEARING // HANES Tee // YASO Faux Leather Jacket (similar)// H&M Jeans // JUSTFAB Sunglasses // TRIPLE 5 SOUL Tote Bag (old)

Spring is officially here!  I love that it’s been in the mid-50’s to 60’s consistently for more than a week!  That means no more winter coats for me and instead I get to wear my favorite faux leather jacket on repeat.  It also means it’s now light out later, so I can do more outfit posts!

My big hair appointment is tomorrow, and I have to say looking at the photo below of my curls I’m somewhat nervous to chop it all off.  It’s really pretty at the length it’s at and I know a lot of girls would love to be in my position.  Then I remember how long it takes me to get my hair to dry (which is over 30 minutes, blow-drying!) and I remember going shorter is the best decision for me at this moment.  I just simply don’t have the time to maintain it, which means I’m constantly wearing a ponytail or bun.  Not very chic.

I’m pretty excited to see how it comes out!  Spring is the perfect time for a change.

Summer Days

Summer Days
{Maxi Dress: H&M (old); Sandals: Melissa; Bag: Cornelia Guest (Bloomingdales); Sunglasses: Vintage (found at Brooklyn Flea); Adorable Yorkiepoo: Adopted!}

This heat and humidity here in NYC this summer has been absolutely brutal. I feel like I’ve been wearing my hair up like this all the time because otherwise I’m sporting a giant frizzy fro. Poor Portia is dying on walks lately between the extreme heat on the sidewalks and her black fur retaining all the heat.

Regardless, I think we both still look pretty fab, despite melting!

On a quick shopping note, I very recently invested in this Cornelia Guest handbag and I’m so glad I did! It’s perfect for my every day bag. It’s just the right size, and looks great with both professional attire as well as on weekends. It’s also really, really well made. It should last me a while. I’m now a huge fan of the brand and can’t wait to see what new designs she comes up with.

Road Trip

Wearing {Fedora: Target; Tank: Calvin Klein; Skirt: Buffalo Exchange; Sandals: Melissa; Tote: Gap; Sunglasses: Vintage via Brooklyn Flea}

Jim and I this past Sunday took a quick road trip to Philly to visit his family and go to a birthday party.  Philly is only a two hour car drive from Brooklyn, so it’s a great same day road trip destination.

On our way back instead of going the more direct, highway route we took a detour and made a quick stop at the Old City District.  Jim and I love all things old and historical so we took a quick hour break to stretch our legs, walk around and check out the sites.  He also got to reminisce a bit being he grew up in the area.

This alley proved to be the perfect backdrop for a few quick outfit shots.  Jim has the patience of a saint and eye of a professional photographer.  He totally called that the lighting was perfect and it was.

Stay tuned tomorrow for some of my favorite shots of the amazing, historical architecture we saw during our walk.

Hot High Line

3 Jun

Highline{Blouse: H&M (thrifted); Shorts & Cuff: H&M; Wedges: Target; Tote: Gap; Sunglasses: Vintage (Brooklyn Flea)}

This past Tuesday, I took the day off from work for an extended Memorial Day holiday. Jim and I spent the day in Manhattan visiting the High Line extension in Chelsea, and then doing some gallery hopping in the area. It’s safe to say we were both pretty “arted-out” after the weekend was over.

It was ridiculously hot out, so I decided to try out an outfit similar to my Memorial Day Inspiration board and go with a breezy leopard blouse, shorts and wedges. I seem to be gravitating towards blouses and shorts a lot this season.

Stay tuned for posts on both our High Line adventure as well as our gallery hopping in the next day or so!

The Grand Finale

7 Oct
Grand Finale 1- Display
{Shirt: H&M (husband’s); Shorts: H&M; Sandals: Alloy; Sunglasses: Payless; Watch: Michael Kors}

And here you have it, my 30th and final post of my summer 30 for 30 wardrobe challenge.  I’m so happy I finally completed it and have it on the site.  It’s funny though that as I write this, I’m wearing a sweater and boots now that it’s fall and here I am in this photo wearing shorts and sandals.  Next time I have to not procrastinate and get these photos up and on the site within a few days of taking the photos.  I have no excuse nowadays now that I have an iPad and it’s totes easy.  That or make it a goal to finish the challenge within the allotted season.

Stay tuned tomorrow for a recap post including photos and links to all thirty outfits.

Day Seven 1- Display
{Blazer: Calvin Klein (thrifted); Tee: dollar store find; Skirt: Ecoture (gift from husband); Platforms: Cynthia Rowley (thrifted); Sunglasses: Husband’s (from a street fair); Cuff: H&M}

I’ve been learning a lot recently about taking my own outfit photos. My hubby will occasionally help out with taking my pictures but I always think I look kind of awkward when he takes them. Strange thing is I feel much more natural posing and taking photos on a tripod with a wireless release, which probably looks weirder to folks passing by in my busy neighborhood than my husband taking photos of me.

I went to art school and photography was one of my favorite classes, and I knew my way around a DSLR pretty well. Now that I finally have a new digital one, it’s kind of like riding a bike. I’m getting used to it again.  Yesterday, I originally was kinda meh about this outfit, but after seeing how my photos were coming out totally fell in love with the outfit.  I thought “Hells yeah!  I have tons of great photos today!” while looking at the screen on my camera reviewing the images I shot while outside during the shoot.  I was way pumped up about it.

Fast forward to editing my photos later on in the evening, and I learn that all of my photos are super blurry.  Only these two were remotely clear.  So much for being a pro photog.  I forgot the most important thing when taking self portraits… set the auto-focus!  That and never trust the viewfinder screen without first zooming in to check that it’s crystal clear.  Dur!  Lesson learned.

Day Seven 2

Op-Art

11 Aug

Last thursday I found myself with some time to kill so I ducked into Forever 21 for a quick sec to see what they had.  That store gives me a headache there’s so much stuff in it.  Amongst the racks and racks of stuff this op-artish top jumped out at me.  I’ve really been drawn to black and white patterns lately and even without trying it on I knew it would flatter me being its drawn it at the waist.  Considering that and looking at the $15 price tag, I figured I’d be silly not to get it.  Glad I did, I lurves it!

What I’m Wearing:

Tank Blouse: Forever 21
Jeggings: Hue (purchased at Bloomingdale’s)
Clogs: Qupid
Belt: Gift
Earrings: Junk (in Williamsburg)
Sunglasses: Love Brigade
